Travelling with a purpose, advancing change together

Narratives Abroad offers a filmmaking tour, immersing participants in Colombia’s vibrant communities while equipping individuals with hands-on smartphone documentary production skills to become sociocultural storytellers. The program safely combines meaningful engagement with expert-led workshops, allowing participants to learn by doing while exploring and documenting local cultures.

Like Geraldine, 300 other women in Comuna 13, are eager to share their stories.

Out and About

Visiting Comuna 13 to document the stories of the women who endured its most turbulent years offers a powerful glimpse into resilience and transformation. Once among the most dangerous favelas, this community now stands as a testament to survival and cultural rebirth.

Through the voices of mothers, daughters, and leaders who lived through violence and loss, we uncover personal narratives of courage beyond statistics. As we walk its steep streets, murals tell stories of struggle and hope, while outdoor escalators symbolize progress in a place once paralyzed by fear.

Our short documentaries will not just tell Comuna 13’s story but amplify the voices of the women who shaped its rebirth—honouring their past and capturing their role in its transformation.

Whether aspiring filmmakers or adventurous travellers, our programs enable participants to craft meaningful, diverse narratives that resonate globally and catalyze change!

A fervent filmmaker

“I make documentaries whenever possible, and still when it’s not.”

Narratives Abroad emerged from the vision of Camilo Gomez Duran, a seasoned documentarian and educator with an M.A. in Documentary Media from Toronto Metropolitan University and a B.A. in Anthropology from Concordia University. Inspired by his passion for storytelling, cultural immersion, and meaningful education, Camilo envisioned pedagogical travel as a way to merge learning and exploration. While the tour operation is separate and run by Ingryd Cortés Ávila in Colombia, Camilo provides documentary filmmaking instruction, drawing from his extensive experience producing documentaries and capturing Colombia’s landscapes through land, aerial, and underwater photography. His multilingual instruction in English, French, and Spanish fosters a dynamic, inclusive learning environment.
